Training camp: News and notes from day 12

— Sam Hellman

Kickoff against Norfolk State is officially two weeks away and the Scarlet Knights hit the practice field on another hot day to prepare for the team’s second scrimmage.

Young limited, Turner misses practice

Senior Kordell Young, who had sore knees after the team’s first two-a-day, returned to practice today, but just did a little bit.

“Good,” said coach Greg Schiano on how Young looked. “We didn’t do that much with him, but he did what he had to.”

True freshman Casey Turner missed practice completely, but Schiano still has not commented on what’s wrong with him.

“[He’s] not so good,” Schiano said. “We kept him in today. We don’t know exactly what the problem is yet. We’re trying to figure that out.”

Preparing for second scrimmage

The Scarlet Knights’ second and final scrimmage of training camp is Saturday. Schiano said it will be “quite similar” to the first in terms of what they will do.

“Maybe a few more situations because we’ve added a few more,” Schiano said. “Last Saturday’s tape and this Saturday’s tape get looked over with a fine-tooth comb both for schematic questions if we have any, and more importantly, the personnel decision part.”

After the scrimmage, Rutgers has three more full days of practice before a half-day Thursday and the break of training camp.

Ishaq Williams visits practice

Brooklyn defensive end Ishaq Williams was the biggest-name recruit at today’s practice. Williams, a four-star recruit on Rivals.com and Scout.com, is the fourth best defensive end in the country according to Rivals and the top player in New York.

He holds 17 Division-1 offers.

This and that

Redshirt freshman Jamal Wilson worked today at right tackle … Former special teams expert Andrew DePaola visited today’s practice. His younger brother, Nick DePaola, is a scout team running back.
